The History of Hewlett Packard (HP)
Two friends and schoolmates from Standford University, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, formed Hewlett Packard (HP) in 1939 with only 8 at hand and working from a one-car garage in Palo Alto.
During the years, a large array of products spanning from almost every corner of the information technology field have been produced by HP.
The first inkjet printers and laser printers for the desktop were produced by HP in 1984 and signalled their entry into the printer and ink cartridge market. Along with its scanner product line, these have later been developed into successful multifunction products, the most significant being single-unit printer/scanner/copier/fax machines, often known as MFCs. The LaserJet printer line which they launched 1984 is actually the most successful product that HP every have made. Ironically, the print mechanisms in HP’s tremendously popular LaserJet line of laser printers depend almost entirely on Canon’s components (print engines), which in turn use technology developed by Xerox. HP develops the hardware, firmware, and software that convert data into dots for the mechanism to print.
Today, HP is the undisputed global leader in the printer field in terms of the number of units sold within the printer market, offering inkjet printers, laser printers, scanners and dot matrix printers for every use from the home to commercial printing.
