LCD vs. DLP Projectors

There are two main categories of projectors that you can rent from projector rental companies for short term needs – LCD and DLP projectors. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. An LCD projector produces images when light passes through its three separate glass panels, each with its own color filter (red, blue and green).

DLP (Digital Light Processing) is a technology developed by Texas Instruments and works on a different principle. A projected image is produced when light is reflected off thousands of tiny mirrors or DMD (digital micro devices) present on the DLP chip. While the basic functions of the two projectors are the same, they have their own advantages and shortcomings.

Pros and cons of using an LCD projector

LCD projectors have higher contrast ratios, thanks to their auto iris technology and inorganic panels. They possess greater image clarity due to a better pixel structure. The image quality that you get with an LCD projector is far superior to that of a DLP projector in the same price range. These projectors are very convenient to install. LCD technology is also preferred for its lower power consumption since the bulbs used in these projectors are normally of a lower wattage. You can rent LCD projectors at reasonable rates from projector rental companies.

One disadvantage with LCD projectors is the size of the unit. In spite of having the same number of lumens as a DLP projector, LCDs are visibly larger and bulkier to handle. The blacks can turn out in a lighter shade of gray than in DLPs. Its organic panels are also prone to degradation after long term exposure to heat. Images in turn, become discolored and there is a visible reduction in color contrast.

Pros and cons of using DLP projectors

The DLP projector chip does not require an air filter, which makes the projector easier to maintain as you will not need to change or clean filters frequently. DLP chips are sealed, keeping them free from dust particles. Another major advantage of DLP projectors is that they are easy to carry. Some models weigh as low as 3 lbs but still have the capacity to generate over 1000 lumens. As DLP projectors use a single imaging chip, they also produce bright images, which is an important advantage if you plan to use the projector in an environment with a lot of ambient light.

Projectors running on DLP technology are not easy to install. They do not have lens shift and long zoom as these features add to the weight of the projector and make them bulky. Color separation or rainbow flares can cause problems in videos, movies and other visuals where frames change quickly. These occasional flashes can be quite distracting.

Both LCD and DLP projectors are used in a number of situations like meetings, trainings, seminars, and classrooms. Manufacturers are constantly adding more features and the technology is moving at a rapid pace. If the price tag is stopping you from using one of these devices, you can use the services of a reliable projector rental company to rent latest projector models.
