KICK-OFF EXCESS WEIGHT WITH KARATE
Getting rid of excess weight is probably on most people’s ‘Action’ list. It’s just not that easy to do!
Carrying surplus weight is not just about body image and self-confidence. Obesity can result in premature death, and can contribute to many serious health issues including heart disease, breathing problems, problems with pregnancy and birth, diabetes, arthritis and high blood cholesterol . The problem is that many people are more worried about squeezing into their jeans than they are squeezing in a healthcare appointment into their busy schedules . A healthcare professional should be your first point of contact if you’re intending to lose weight.
It’s never an easy journey, but the following elements are critical in dropping weight – eating fewer calories and getting active . The goal should always be safe and effective long-term weight loss, not radical crash dieting that’s generally likely to be short term and detrimental to your health. It’s easier for some people to shed excess weight than it is for others and a person’s genetic make-up does play a role.
For moderate weight loss, an average person could reduce their daily calories by 500 and increase their daily activity to burn around the same amount. Daily calorie intake should not be less than 1 200 calories (preferably around 2000 per day for an average man) with weekly weightloss not to exceed around 0.5 kilos.
To reduce calorie intake, we should be eating less saturated fat and refined sugar, more lean meat, poultry and fish, more fruit and fresh vegetables, less or no alcohol, more high fibre foods such as wholegrains and beans and drinking loads of water.
In terms of an exercise routine, losing weight entails daily activity of at least 30 minutes. Household chores do count – you can easily burn 300 calories by vacuuming the house for an hour – but that sounds more like a daily grind! If the exercise routine is exciting and interesting, your chances of losing weight will improve. But which is the best one for you?.
The top activities for burning calories include running, step aerobics, skipping, swimming, skiing and cycling. Half an hour of these activities can burn anything from 180 to 500 calories. It’s also important to do some strength and resistance training along with the cardio to burn up more calories – plus it’s been proven to an effective strategy in weight loss.
And if you’re looking for a fun, exciting, social and confidence-boosting way of losing weight – you should contemplate signing up for karate lessons. It’s easy to become bored with the monotony of the home fitness DVD or the treadmill at the gym, and hence karate lessons have become the sport (and the weight loss activity) of choice of thousands of people. Karate isn’t only about self-defence as many people believe – it also involves developing fitness, flexibility, muscle tone and strength as well as developing emotional and intellectual elements, such as self-esteem, discipline, trust and integrity.
It is believed that for an average person weighing 145 pounds, sixty minutes of karate will burn up approximately 600 calories. Compare that to around 400 used up in an hour of moderate exercise on an elliptical equipment or a rowing machine.
Martial arts and shotokan karate is beneficial to people regardless of their age and stage, says Perth karate expert, Grant Rollinson who is a 4th Dan. ”Losing weight isn’t only about burning calories. Exercise is such a vital part of daily lives – and it’s important to find an activity that is good for the body in terms of fitness, losing or maintaining weight, strength and flexibility – and that’s good for the soul too“.
